7 Focuses, 7 Books — In the Land of White Lilies
We took the second step of our “7 Focuses, 7 Books” project. This month, in line with the Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention area of focus, we read Grigory Petrov’s “In the Land of White Lilies”. We are continuing to collect books for our dream library project and carrying on with a reading journey full of awareness.
As for the connection between the Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention area of focus and the book:
While telling the story of a society’s journey from darkness to light, “In the Land of White Lilies” shows through powerful examples how peace and constructive communication can change a nation’s destiny. In the book, people’s ability to understand one another, work towards common goals and resolve conflicts plays a critical role in transforming society.
The Rotaract perspective, in turn, emphasizes that peace is not merely the absence of war, but the capacity for communication, empathy, mutual respect and finding solutions. The enlightened leaders in the book show that a country can only move forward when people listen to one another and when disagreements are talked through and resolved before they grow.
Alongside individual effort, the book also highlights the importance of social solidarity. The path to a peaceful society lies in improving education, empowering individuals and tackling problems together. Resolving conflicts, meanwhile, requires individuals to think critically, take different perspectives into account and act constructively.
